With a final grunt, Morgan put the last bag in Dakota’s hotel room. Now all she had to do was formally check out of the old room and she could go fetch Dakota. Deciding to do it the easy way instead of walking all the way back down to the lobby, she called the front desk and then headed up to her aunt’s room.

“Get everything you needed to get done?” Morgan asked as Pam opened the door.

“Yes, a while ago. We were just waiting on you,” Pam smiled. “I hope you don’t mind. I let her have a snack but told her no TV.”

Morgan chuckled, noticing the death glare that Dakota gave them both. “You ready to head back to our room?” Morgan asked.

Dakota didn’t answer, but stood up, giving both of them a dirty look as she tried to escape out the door. She didn’t get very far, however, as Morgan caught her arm.

“Did she behave?” Morgan directed toward her aunt.

“For the most part,” Pam chuckled. “Nothing I couldn’t handle, right, Dakota?” she winked. “Now, will you two be joining me for dinner? There are about ten of us that will be meeting at the steak house at eight. I just need to know numbers for the reservation.”

Exchanging a quick look with Dakota, Morgan nodded. “For now we’ll plan on it; if things change, we’ll give you a call.”

“Perfect,” Pam responded, accepting a hug from Morgan and then somewhat reluctantly from Dakota. “I’ll see you two later.”

Dakota managed to get all the way to the elevator before she said, “I can’t believe you told her you grounded me. That was so embarrassing.”

Morgan blinked somewhat in surprise. “I’m sorry, that wasn’t my intention. I came up here last night worried half to death and scared stupid. She knew something was up, and I had to tell her why you taking off was such a big deal. She gave me that look,” Morgan stopped and shuddered. “Trust me, I didn’t stand a chance.”

Dakota sighed. “You didn’t tell her anything else, did you?”

“No. I told you that was between you and me.”

“Are you still going to…?”

“Yes,” Morgan nodded as the elevator door opened. Morgan continued into the room, opening the door for both of them and not realizing that Dakota was trying to hide the tears that stubbornly kept appearing. “Hey now, a little early for tears, isn’t it?” she gently teased.

“It’s not funny,” Dakota sniffed, wiping away another tear.

“Come here,” Morgan invited, grabbing Dakota’s hand and escorting her to a plush chair in the corner. Sitting and then pulling Dakota into her lap, she let the teen curl up and tuck her head under her chin.

Kissing the top of Dakota’s head, Morgan tried again. “Tell me why you are crying. Was it really that embarrassing?”

“Yes,” Dakota sniffled, before groaning. “No. In a lot of ways Pam is like another mother to me. It was a little embarrassing, but it was kinda nice just to spend some time talking with her too.
